In 1994 Data East built "The Who's Tommy Pinball Wizard", based on the rock opera "The Who's Tommy", which was performed on Broadway in the 70s.
The opera is based on the 1969 album of the same name "Tommy", which is about the life of the deaf, dumb and blind boy Tommy - the son of RAF pilot Captain Walker - and is mainly about the end of the Second World War. One day Tommy finds a pinball machine at the scrap yard and falls in love with the game - despite its considerable limitations. The day comes when Tommy takes part in a competition and beats the reigning champ - the Pinball Wizard - and becomes a wizard (master of pinball) himself. His beaten opponent admits, "I thought I was the Bally table king, but I just handed my pinball crown to him."
The Flipper contains 21 songs, sung from the original cast of the Broadway show of the 70's and provides real concert feeling and fun!
The pin contains many other highlights - one of them is the plane of Tommy's father - Captain Walker, whose wingspan extends over the entire playing field.
Tommy has several multiballs. For pinball fans the madness: the 6er-Mulitball. However, this is not so easy to achieve. First the player - by hitting different targets - has to make the Union Jack in the middle of the field shine completely. Once he's done that - start 12 different mini-games - all based on different scenes from the musical. Here it is always worth taking a look at the successful animations in the dot matrix display - always accompanied by the corresponding original music. If the player successfully completes all the mini-games, the 6er multiball awaits as a reward! The pinball machine has many more exciting targets and game features and it takes a long time to find all of them - and even longer to fulfill them. Tommy The Who's Pinball is a real challenge, visually incredibly well done and a MUST for all The Who fans!
